On October 27, 2009, Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter delivered the closing remarks at CIPE’s "Democracy that Delivers" conference to an audience of several hundred attendees in Washington D.C. and at CIPE’s Egypt office in Cairo. Democratic institutions, she said, require the same conditions that functioning markets do: strong stakeholders, merit-based preferences, transparency, and self-reliance. Countries that commit to deliver results are precisely those countries to stand with, support, and assist in development. CIPE recently marked the 25th year of working to build functional democracies in more than 100 countries around the world. In celebration, CIPE held an anniversary conference, which centered around a theme of building democracies that deliver for all segments of the population. The conference brought together leading thinkers, practitioners, and policymakers in the area of international development. The traditional approach to studying economic growth overlooks the importance of individuals and individual firms. Market economies are not monolithic – there are four different types of capitalism (oligarchic, state-guided, big-firm, and entrepreneurial), each with different features and implications for growth. Entrepreneurial capitalism is the most effective driver of economic growth because it provides opportunities for new firms to innovate and create new markets.Read more>>

Citizenship is not innate; it needs to be taught and cultivated in young people through civic education and leadership training.
Citizenship includes both rights and responsibilities; for youth to become active citizens, they need to be given a voice in decision-making processes that affect them. In order for young people to develop a sense of citizenship, they must first realize the positive role they can play through active civic participation.
